I cannot believe it! I cannot fucking believe it!!!!! I cannot, cannot, cannot fucking believe it. This just came in to my web site email box. I have never before, I may say, in however many years of using email, been so tempted to hang someone’s email address in a public place, with a banner saying DIVEBOMB THIS PERSON AND MAKE IT GOOD. I do get a certain amount of weird and offensive mail. But this takes a biscuit I haven’t needed to offer in a while . . . it’s so obscene I almost want to believe it’s some kind of a sick joke. But I’m afraid it’s genuine. Please particularly note use of words ‘ruin’, ‘unfortunately’ and ‘normally’. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. I am resigning from the human race! I am going to go live among the tentacled blobs of . . . oh, I forget where Jake’s tentacled blobs are from! Wherever they are, I’m going there!!!! Read on. Go on, I dare you. I found your new book, Dragonhaven in the children's section in Barnes & Nobles, under the 9 - 12 year old group. My daughter is 13, has read some of your other works, and enjoyed them. She started reading the book yesterday and finished it today. I'm writing this to you to ask you as she put it - - "Why did she have to ruin a perfectly good book by including 2 paragraphs towards the end, saying that someone is gay?!!!!" I don't understand it! Yes we unfortunately live in a very liberal society. But why do children need to deal with alternate sexual preferences? Let them learn about it later - if they need to. Let's see if they develop normally. Why give them ideas of being gay or lesbian?? Those 2 paragraphs found on page 293 really bothered my daughter - she and I have no desire for her to read about such people - Eric was fine without Jake telling of this conversation. If you write about any other people with such preferences please include this information in the dustcover description so we know not to purchase the book! Please respond, my daughter really would like to know why you ruined your story. Thank you! And my calm, well reasoned reply: I am well beyond appalled at your contemptible attitude toward 'alternate sexual preferences', and I regret you are raising your daughter to share your grotesque prejudices. I suggest you avoid my books in future, because I have gone over the line you're drawing before now and will certainly do so again. Robin McKinley
PS: Although just by the way, who are the idiots at Barnes and Noble putting it in 9 to 12? Note to my publishers ensues . . . I think I’ll send them a copy of the email while I’m at it. I want to spoil as many people’s days as possible, I’m afraid, I need the company. . . . Tags: outrageous, readers

Well, traditionally you are not allowed to have a happy gay couple, because they can be gay, but can't be, y'know, rewarded for their gayness.
Somewhat like teenagers have to be punished by the universe for having sex, or women for enjoying it.
Robin, I haven't had a chance to read Dragonhaven yet (I am in Australia, and haven't seen it here yet, thought it might be) but I get a certain glee from spotting casual alternative lifestyles in books, including YA and children's books. Once darling example is the 'boys from the wine shop' in Diana Wynne Jones's Hexwood.

Yes we unfortunately live in a very liberal society
This is the part that gets me. Why don't people understand that, you know, thanks to 'liberals', we don't have institutionalized enslavement of people who aren't white; women can vote and own property and go to college and all that; people are allowed to worship at the church of their choice (even if it's the church of conservatism/dominionism, OK); and, best of all, we're allowed to choose what books to read and when. (Well, okay, perhaps the fact that I am allowed to leave the house, in pants no less, and work without having to cover myself in veils is the best part. But I do really like books.)
I, for one, am glad for liberals.
(The parent's lack of commas bothers me as well.)

Arrrgggghhhh. There are still some folks who will hate without reason. I've gotten so appalled that I can't believe that I don't just go off to a desert island to get away from the idiots. My new religion is DBAA Don't be an Asshole. That is the only thing to it. No extra rules, no buildings. Just, don't do things that are done by assholes. Don't be mean, rude, hateful, prejudiced, cruel, etc. In this religion you are, however, required to tell people when they are being an asshole. So,to the woman who wrote you about gays, "Lady, don't be an asshole."

That IS a calm, well-reasoned reply, and I applaud you for it. I would have had a hard time replying with as much dignity if I had been in your shoes.
Just for the record, although I haven't yet read Dragonhaven (I will soon! I promise!), I think it's great to introduce elements like this into fantasy, or, yes, even into CHILDREN'S books. I too am a parent, and even though my own daughter is not yet old enough to read much beyond Eric Carle books, I intend to teach her that the point of reading is to stretch and exercise one's mind, not just reinforce the sheltered prejudices already in place.
I'm glad emails like this one are a rare occurrence, but I'm also sad you have to endure them at all.
